Kyra Alston '23 has participated in the Law Week Speech Contest since 4th grade and has won first place each year. This year she won 3rd place.
Kyra captivated the audience with her confidence, connection, and comprehension of the topic. Even though this was Kyra's 4th year participating in the OCBA contest, each year, since the age of 3, she has competed in her church's oratorical contest. As a result, Kyra was able to captivate, capture, and command the audience's attention with her poise, passion, and humor as she dealt with the theme. In short, the speech addressed the U.S. Government and its distinct and independent branches—Congress, the Presidency, and the Supreme Court and how these entities interact to form our framework for freedom. Likewise, the theme required speakers and us to reflect on the separation of powers as fundamental to our constitutional purpose and to consider how our governmental system is working for us and our posterity.
Kyra delivered her speech to a power-packed audience: judges, lawyers, and other business and law professionals. Kyra received congratulatory comments, positive feedback, and encouragement from those in attendance. She already is looking forward to participating in the 2019 Law Week Speech Contest and activities!
