Claire Maiocco, a rising Trinity Prep senior, competed in Olympic trials for the 100-meter butterfly in Omaha in June, accompanied by Trinity Prep Aquatics Coach Rocco Aceto. Making it to the Olympic trials is an amazing feat, and she hopes she'll have the opportunity to try again in four years. Claire credits some of her success to the mentorship she's received from fellow swimmers at Trinity Prep. "When I first arrived at Trinity Prep, two of the older swimmers and team leaders took me under their wing, even though I was only a little sixth grader at the time and they were juniors," Claire said. "I really looked up to them because of their kindness to me and because of their success in the pool. They were always encouraging me. I'm really grateful for their support because their actions made me want to stick with the sport."
Coach Aceto stated, "Claire was one of 1,600 elite high school, college, and pro swimmers to compete in the U.S.A. Olympic Trials. Such an elite group of the 400,000 plus athletes in our sport. Trinity Prep and Trinity Prep Aquatics are proud of her accomplishments."
Claire has overcome challenges during her swimming career, such as juvenile diabetes, and has become a leader on her team. "To me, life with diabetes is normal, so I try to let it affect me as little as possible in my daily life and swimming. Sometimes I have a bad day and my swim meet or practice are adversely affected by my blood sugars. Overall, I don't let diabetes dictate my life, and I will never let it stop me from achieving my goals," Claire said.
While Claire was competing in the Olympic trials, a Trinity Prep alumnus, Billy Cooke '14, won the College World Series across the street in Omaha!
