Seniors Parker Jochum, Sean Leider, Charlie Tang and Valerie Trapp have been selected as winners of National Merit Scholarships. Parker Jochum, Charlie Tang and Valerie Trapp are winners of the National Merit $2,500 Scholarship, underwritten by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation by its own funds, and Sean Leider is the winner of the National Merit Siemens Scholarship, a corporate-sponsored scholarship.

All winners of the approximately 7,500 National Merit Scholarships are chosen from the group of approximately 15,000 National Merit Finalists. In order to advance in the competition and be considered for a Merit Scholarship Award, a Semifinalist had to become a Finalist by fulfilling several requirements that included submitting a detailed scholarship application and presenting a record of very high academic achievement.

Approximately 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships will be offered to the Class of 2018 nationwide, and every National Merit Finalist is considered for the award given to Parker Jochum, Charlie Tang and Valerie Trapp. Winners are named in every state, in numbers based on the state's percentage of the nation's high school graduating seniors.

Corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships have specific criteria, and about 230 companies and businesses finance National Merit Scholarships for qualified Finalists. Most of the approximately 1,000 corporate-sponsored awards are for children of a sponsor organization's employee, but some are specified for residents in communities where a company plant or corporate office is located. Additionally, a few may be provided to Finalists who have college major or career interests that a sponsor wishes to encourage.

The National Merit Corporation also offers college-sponsored National Merit scholarships, and winners of these scholarships will be announced by the National Merit Corporation later this spring.

The Trinity Prep Forensics Team took nine students this past weekend to the University of Kentucky to compete in the Tournament of Champions. One of the top three most prestigious tournaments all year, students have to do very at tournaments earlier in the year to compete. Eli Finkelstein '19 and Alissa Vuillier '19 made it to quarterfinals, placing in the top 24 of 96 competitors in Extemporaneous Speaking. Ashley Mason '20 placed 9th out of 49 competitors in Oral Interpretation. Finally, Alexis Huang '20 and Katie Rohrbaugh '20 won first place out of 151 competing teams in Silver Public Forum! Half of the TPS students who participated in the tournament advanced to elimination rounds! This is a great accomplishment for the whole team, as Trinity Prep has not had a champion at the Tournament of Champions in recent history.

Additionally, Nathan Johnston has been recognized by the National Speech & Debate Association for his exemplary volunteerism to promote speech and debate. He was elected by his peers in 2017 to serve a two-year term as a committee member. Trinity Prep is very appreciative of Nathan and his dedication to our forensics program.

Student performers qualify as nominees at the Jimmy Awards by winning top honors at regional high school musical theatre awards competitions presented by Broadway League member performing arts centers. Over 1,500 high schools and 100,000 students participate in these annual events. Since its inception in 2009, the NHSMTA has enabled over $2,000,000 in university and conservatory scholarships to be awarded to talented students at the national and local level—several of whom have already been cast in Broadway, Touring and West End productions.

The 2018 Jimmy Awards nominees will prepare for their debut on a Broadway stage during a ten-day professional training intensive with NYU Tisch School of the Arts' New Studio with Broadway faculty members plus other theatre professionals. Winners will be selected by a panel of industry experts.

The Jimmy Awards are presented by the Broadway League Foundation in honor of legendary Broadway producer/theatre owner James M. Nederlander, and are supported by many leading theatre industry organizations. More information about the National High School Musical Theatre Awards program can be found at JimmyAwards.com.

Part of the Foundation's mission is to enlighten and increase the public's knowledge, appreciation and awareness of the theatrical arts, and since its founding in 1993, has supported a number of projects to help preserve Broadway's heritage and introduce new audiences to Broadway theatre. The Foundation is a corporation organized under the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law of the State of New York, the purposes of which are exclusively charitable as defined in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. Kyra Alston '23 has participated in the Law Week Speech Contest since 4th grade and has won first place each year. This year she won 3rd place.

Kyra captivated the audience with her confidence, connection, and comprehension of the topic. Even though this was Kyra's 4th year participating in the OCBA contest, each year, since the age of 3, she has competed in her church's oratorical contest. As a result, Kyra was able to captivate, capture, and command the audience's attention with her poise, passion, and humor as she dealt with the theme. In short, the speech addressed the U.S. Government and its distinct and independent branches—Congress, the Presidency, and the Supreme Court and how these entities interact to form our framework for freedom. Likewise, the theme required speakers and us to reflect on the separation of powers as fundamental to our constitutional purpose and to consider how our governmental system is working for us and our posterity.

Kyra delivered her speech to a power-packed audience: judges, lawyers, and other business and law professionals. Kyra received congratulatory comments, positive feedback, and encouragement from those in attendance. She already is looking forward to participating in the 2019 Law Week Speech Contest and activities!
