Trinity Prep students Amanda Rivas '16 and Lauren Cameron '17 have been awarded Spanish National Honor Society (SNHS) scholarships for their academic success in Spanish. Rivas won the Joseph Adams Scholarship, which awards $1000 towards her college studies, and Cameron is the recipient of the Bertie Green Travel Award to Ecuador. She will travel during the summer with 23 other SNHS recipients for a week, experiencing both the language and the culture of Ecuador first hand.

These two students went through a selective nomination process by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. It required the submission of a video interview, high school transcript, two letters of recommendation and a resume with school and extracurricular activities.

The awards given to Rivas and Cameron are a prestigious honor for Trinity Preparatory School as the scholarships are only given to select students across the nation. Rivas' award is only awarded to 48 students from over 2,400 SNHS chapters across the United States and Cameron's award, valued at $3000, is only awarded to 24 students from over 2,400 chapters.

Spanish teacher, Amarilys Heard, couldn't be prouder of her students. She said, "It means a great deal to me as a Trinity Prep Spanish teacher! It not only reflects their efforts and dedication, but also the level of academic rigor provided in our program to have students compete at a national level and win. It attests to their desire to master the language and to continue their cultural growth. The students' success is a collective effort from their behalf and from every teacher who has been part of their learning."

Trinity Prep has an extensive history of excellence in academics and has continued to maintain an active chapter of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica for the past 35 years. The chapter continues to grow with the recent induction of 18 new students.

On Tuesday, Feb. 22, Trinity Prep hosted the National History Bee regional competition. Over 100 contestants attended the event from Florida and South Georgia, and this was Trinity Prep's fourth time hosting. From all around the nation, students begin hoping to make it to the National History Bee Regional competition by taking an online qualifying exam. If they score high enough on the online portion, they are invited to compete in their respective regional competitions.

The regional competition was intense as students competed head-to-head in "buzz-ins"--fast- paced sets of questions where participants have to "buzz-in" the fastest with the correct answer. After many rounds of competition, three Trinity Prep students qualified for the National History Bee finals in Chicago in June. Seventh graders Enzo Cunanan, Emma Davey, and Frank Kogan all qualified to compete on the national level. Cunanan also came in second in the seventh grade finals. Congratulations to these students!

Trinity Prep junior Amber Yang participated in the Dr. Nelson Ying Orange County Science Expo and took top honors in a variety of different categories. Yang won first place in engineering, the grand prize in physical sciences, the Yale Science and Engineering Association Most Outstanding Presentation in Physical Sciences, and a trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix to display her project.

"Amber is a very motivated and capable student," says Michael Arney, Yang's science teacher. "She found something she was passionate about and developed an awesome project. It was impressive not only to me, but certainly to the judges as well."

Yang's project is entitled "Orbital Recognition System for Space Debris Tracking, Using Artificial Neural Networks: A Journey from Inner-Brain GPS to Outer-Space GPS." Yang created an artificial neural network system that has the capability to detect, identify, and track the orbits of space debris in low earth orbit to combat the increasing risk of space debris colliding with space vehicles.

Yang says, "The science fair has given me a wonderful opportunity to work on a challenging and complex question, and I look forward to continuing my research in the next few years."

Other Trinity Prep students also placed in the Expo in a variety of different categories. First place winners received a plaque and an expense-paid trid to the Florida State Science Engineering Fair. First place in Behavioral and Social Sciences in the Senior Division went to Akhil Karandikar '18, first place in Chemistry in the Senior Division went to Saumya Sao '16, and first place in Engineering in the Senior Division went to Amber Yang '17. Antony Fuleihan '17 placed second in Earth and Environmental Science, and Pranav Uppalapati '19 took third in Biomedical and Health Sciences in the Senior Division.

A number of special awards were also won by Trinity Prep students. The CDM Smith award and the Ricoh Americas Corporation award were won by Fuleihan, and the Yale Science and Engineering Association award was won by Yang.

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the Expo!

On Feb. 26, the Trinity Prep Honors Strings classes performed side by side with the Russian Kremlin Chamber Orchestra for the student body and faculty. In addition to their performance, the orchestra participated in a master class for the string students, who were given the opportunity to conduct the group.

Senior violinist Julia Paoli was ecstatic to work with the orchestra. "Performing with the orchestra was a great experience and very inspiring for us musicians," she said, "My favorite part of the day was the master class they conducted, and when I got to conduct their orchestra, it was much harder than it looks!"

"It's just so exciting that the Russian orchestra, which was on tour, by the way, could come and spend a day with the kids," said strings teacher Maureen May. "All of the musicians are top-notch soloists from Russia, and having them show the students how to play on a different level that they don't see every day was an exceptional experience."

Euro Challenge team earns spot in semi-final round

The Euro Challenge is a competition in which teams of freshmen and sophomores present 15-minute speeches on a country in the Euro Zone, focusing on one of nine potential economic issues. Trinity Prep's Euro Challenge team of Valerie Trapp '18, Cecelia Miller '18, Parker Jochum '18, Alexandra Lipton '18, Sumer Sao '18, Josh Finkelstein '18, and Allen Park '19 recently competed in the regional competition and earned a spot in the semi-final round, beating out teams from all across Florida. They spoke about Germany's aging population and demographic change, and the competition was judged by European diplomats and federal reserve economists. The semi-final competition will take place in mid-April at the New York Federal Reserve; the top five teams go on to the final round that evening. Last year the Trinity Prep team placed fifth in the final round of competition. Kelly Aull, faculty advisor for the Trinity Prep Euro Challenge team, said,

"The Euro Challenge team prepared extensive notes and research for this challenge, and learned a lot about public policy along the way. They survived a difficult Q&A session with actual policy-makers and I couldn't be more proud of their work and their ability to maintain composure under pressure. I can't wait to see how they'll do at nationals!"

We couldn't be prouder of these students and we wish them the best of luck in New York!
